Enforcement agencies record almost 300 arrests in a week

The City’s Traffic Service, Law Enforcement
and Metro Police Departments arrested 290 suspects and recorded nearly
60 000 transgressions during weekly enforcement patrols. The Public
Emergency Communication Centre meanwhile logged 2 434 calls over a 48-hour
period this weekend.
During the past week, Metro Police officers made 81 arrests and issued 1 920 fines.
In one of the latest incidents on Sunday, 11 December 2022, Metro Police officers apprehended a 37-year-old suspect for the possession of a firearm in Kewtown, Athlone. They also confiscated a 9mm pistol with eight rounds of ammunition.
On Saturday, 10 December 2022, Metro Police officers on patrol in Hanover Park arrested a suspected drug dealer who had hidden various quantities of tik and mandrax in a canister on his person. The 30-year-old was detained at Philippi SAPS.
During ongoing patrols and operations in Manenberg, officers arrested 12 suspects on a range of charges including the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, attempted murder, possession of a stolen vehicle, reckless and negligent driving and malicious damage to property.
TRAFFIC SERVICE
Officers arrested 74 suspects and issued 51 203 fines during the past week. They executed 1 244 warrants and impounded 125 public transport vehicles.
The arrests included 64 for driving under the influence of alcohol and 10 for reckless and negligent driving.
LAW ENFORCEMENT DEPARTMENT
Law Enforcement officers conducted 440 enforcement operations, during which they made 135 arrests and issued 4 544 fines.
PUBLIC EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION CENTRE (PECC)
The past weekend saw the PECC record 2 434 incidents, which included 903 medical calls, 203 incidents of assault, 125 fire related incidents, 90 motor vehicle and pedestrian vehicle accidents and 56 domestic violence incidents.
'We will increase our enforcement efforts during the festive season with a specific focus on road and vehicle safety, driver fitness and arresting those driving while under the influence of alcohol. A zero tolerance on the use of alcohol on beaches will be followed. The drunk driving and emergency statistics remain a cause for concern. We really need to re-evaluate our relationship with alcohol, but also the many other factors that give rise to the levels of inter-personal violence we experience in our society.
'The festive season is only going to get busier, and while we deal with many enforcement demands, it is also very comforting to see how we are able to pull off major events as a city, for the benefit of locals and visitors. Thus far this month, we've hosted the successful switching on of the festive lights event, with no notable incidents, and similarly, the Cape Town Sevens this past weekend,' said the Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
